Where is started
Obento was founded by Dan and Ling in 2020, born out of a shared love for the food they'd tracked down on their travels; the kind of bowl you'd find down a side street in a bustling Asian city, made properly, without pretension. It's an instinct that runs in the family, going back generations of Asian restaurants built by hand. Joburg was missing a dedicated ramen bar. So they built one.
What we do
Ramen sits at the heart of everything we make focusing onFar Eastern flavours, built on rich, patient broths and noodles that hold their own. Our menu stays deliberately focused rather than trying to cover every corner of Asian cuisine, because we'd rather do a handful of dishes properly than a long menu adequately.
Where we're headed
As we grow, we're chasing new flavour perspectives: fresh ideas worth exploring, brought in where they genuinely work. But every addition still answers to the same standard that got us started: good, wholesome flavour, done right. Sticking to our roots isn't about standing still. It's about knowing exactly what Obento is, so that everything new we try still tastes unmistakably like us.
